Clearly. Stack of dimes on that one.
Also, It’s cast aluminum. Which I know is a notoriously poor material to try to weld with. So yes, I am going to inspect it, especially since bolt tightening is a tough job for you.

Well, ability, knowledge, and effort are three different things.
Hopefully this is functional and you can wash your hands of this shop.

Should probably hold for a good long while
, gumminess notwithstanding. Should have been cleaned first, of course, and will require grinding for where bolts seat.

I could tell the other guy at the shop wanted to apologize but couldn’t. Still not going back.

1) clean joint and do a pr ecise fit up. 2) hold a chicken directly over workpiece. 3) squeeze chicken. 4) profit!

In this case I am actually happy there is more material. Might actually give it some more strength.

That might be the worst aluminium welding I’ve ever seen. That looks.... almost like he just spooled up some aluminium wire in his MIG welder and went at it (and without cranking up the gas) .

I have done worse aluminum welding than that, but in my defense, it was not only the first time I’d welded aluminum
but also on a piece that was less than a millimeter thick and corroded. It was nearly a miracle I managed to pull it off.

Worst case ontario you could use that as a template to have another shop machine a new one.

I could excuse the bugger welds on aluminum if there was evidence of prep. Ideally it would be cleaned at least an inch out from the weld zone, then ground to a 60 deg bevel and have a stack of dimes on each side. So to confirm, yes this does look like shit and I would probably buy a new one if possible.

I should’ve probably prefaced it as the worst aluminium welding I’ve seen done professionally.

My aluminum welding is sub par, that’s why it’s not for sale, I can’t say I’d do any better, but I know a bead of chicken shit when I see one.

Noone makes new, used they are 80 $. I'm sure it would be easy to fab out of steel but I work out of my parents driveway so no chance there.

I'd just chuck the 80 bucks at getting a used, intact piece. If I had a Haas mill for personal use, I'd clone that plate in a jiffy.

I can use TIG welder but I do know that welding fa irly thin oxidized aluminum is beyond my skills. I once tried to fix a broken o xidized alternator bracket and I truly regret tr ying. This is way better than I could have done.

you don’t grind aluminum when prepping it for weld. Abrasives are a no-no. They stick in the material and contaminate. You want metal cutters that won’t smear the soft metal either.

My inner mechanical engineer wants to drone on about how aluminum has lousy fatigue strength to begin with, the heat affected zone has lost any temper and the weld geometry introduces stress concentrations that weren’t part of the original casting, but...
Ehh, it wasn’t exactly a refined aircraft part to begin with, the weld metal is probably much stronger than the base metal, there may not have been any temper to begin with, the load is light, and while it is guaranteed to fail eventually (every aluminum part is), it will probably live a long life in this state. I’d use a flashlight and some cleaner to inspect it for cracks at every other oil change but otherwise use it happily.

The pieces in question were the treadplates for the front doors of my Galaxie. Available in reproduction only for two-door cars, as in the picture below:
The rolled carpet-retaining edge on my pieces was corroded badly over about half the length, so I bent some thin aluminum stock over a piece of tubing as a template, bent a flange, cut off the old edge where damaged, and welded my new pieces to the back side... which was the more corroded side.
I did the work with a spool gun, aluminum wire, and argon gas - not TIG.

Carbides and a wire wheel dedicated to aluminum. Take your time, keep moving, don't melt the base. Voila. Done.

Don’t worry, it will eventually fail anyway regardless of the quality of the weld . You’ll be fine.

The one in My Bird Is The Word’s post was TIG welded, certainly. I was saying that I had done my project with a spool gun - the difficult thin work.

A luminum can be a ho rri ble material in unsuitable conditions. If I ever need to we ld an used aluminum parts I’ll sandblast t hem clean before trying to weld.
